Why Binance freezes accounts
The block is triggered by automated risk control, and there is almost always one of four reasons behind it: an AML monitoring hit on an incoming transaction (contact with a tainted address somewhere in the chain), a mismatch in your KYC data, access from a jurisdiction the platform does not serve, or an external request from a payment partner or a state authority.
It matters whether your account is locked or only your withdrawals are suspended: if you can still log in but cannot withdraw, that is a different scenario with a different procedure, covered on its own page.
How to unfreeze a Binance account: the appeal procedure
- Record the current state. Screenshots of the notice, the case number, your balance. The notice disappears along with your access to the interface, so save it immediately.
- One ticket, official channel only. The support form or the in-app chat. Parallel enquiries from different email addresses reset your place in the review queue.
- Answer the request precisely. If you have been asked for source of funds, assemble the file using our guide to source of funds requests and send it in a single message.
- Controlled waiting. A reminder in the ticket every 5–7 business days. A standard review takes 2–8 weeks.
- Escalation. After 6–8 weeks with no movement, send a formal letter of claim to the registered address of the operating entity serving your region and file a complaint with the regulator that licenses it.
When you need a lawyer
Three markers: an amount you are not prepared to lose; silence from the platform for more than six weeks; the phrase "at the request of a competent authority" — in that last case correspondence with support is pointless and the work has to be done on the legal basis of the freeze.
Who actually reviews your case — and why the vocabulary matters
The decision to freeze is not made by the support agent you are writing to. It sits with Binance’s risk and compliance team, ultimately overseen by a Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) — the person legally responsible for deciding whether the activity on your account warrants a suspicious activity report (SAR) to a financial intelligence unit. Most AML hits are generated automatically by blockchain-analytics screening (tools such as Chainalysis or Elliptic) flagging contact with a tainted address somewhere upstream in the transaction chain, or by a mismatch under the FATF Travel Rule on an incoming transfer.
That is why the wording of your reply matters. A request for “source of funds” is not the same as “source of wealth”: the first asks where this specific deposit came from, the second asks how you accumulated your assets overall, and answering one when the platform asked for the other is a common reason reviews go to a second round. Enhanced due diligence (EDD) and re-KYC requests, politically-exposed-person (PEP) screening and payment-partner escalations each follow their own internal track — identifying which track you are on is the first thing we do when we take over a file.
In practice, the single biggest thing that extends a Binance review isn’t the trigger — it’s the client’s reaction to it. We regularly see people open a second account or hire a ‘recovery agent’ within the first 48 hours, which resets the compliance queue and adds a fraud flag that wasn’t there before. If you’ve had contact with a tainted address somewhere upstream in the chain, that’s usually resolvable with documentation; it’s the parallel tickets and self-help attempts that turn a six-week review into a six-month one.

Frequently asked questions
How do I unfreeze my Binance account?
By passing the review the platform is asking for: answer the document request with one complete file through the official ticket. There is no workaround method of unfreezing an account — anyone offering that service is running a scam.
How long does Binance hold funds frozen?
A standard compliance review takes 2–8 weeks. A freeze imposed at the request of an authority lasts until the measure is lifted, usually months. Indefinite retention with no explanation is grounds for a formal claim.
Is it possible to recover a closed Binance account?
If the platform has closed the account and invited you to withdraw your balance, reinstatement is unlikely — but withdrawing that balance is your right, and the process can be supported legally.
