Why did Coinbase restrict my account
Coinbase applies one label to several different measures: a purchase restriction (usually a payment method problem or a chargeback), restricted to withdrawals only (offboarding — the platform is ending the relationship but releasing your funds), a full restriction with a document request (a compliance review), and a freeze imposed on an external order.
You can tell which one applies from the email: Coinbase always sends a notice to the account address, and its wording is more precise than the banner in the interface.
The procedure by type of restriction
- Purchase restriction. Check the payment method and your refund history; it usually clears once the card is confirmed or the hold expires.
- Withdrawals only. This is offboarding. Do not contest the decision — concentrate on getting the funds out: prepare the receiving account and a source of funds file for the bank.
- Document request. A standard compliance review: one complete answer in the same case, 2–6 weeks of waiting, a reminder once a week.
- External order. Support cannot help — you have to work on the legal basis of the measure.
Escalation
Coinbase has a formalised ladder: ticket → formal complaint → financial ombudsman or the regulator in your region. A complaint to the regulator is a working tool: the platform is obliged to respond within a set deadline.
Coinbase’s regulatory position — and the escalation routes it creates
Coinbase operates in the United States as a FinCEN-registered money services business (MSB) holding state money transmitter licences, and in other markets through locally regulated entities. That regulatory footprint defines your escalation options: a US customer can complain to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a UK customer of the FCA-registered entity can turn to the Financial Ombudsman Service, and an EU customer can invoke national financial-supervision complaint channels. A restriction letter that amounts to offboarding — Coinbase’s Trust & Safety or compliance team closing the relationship — is a different legal situation from a temporary document-request hold, and the response strategy differs accordingly.
Where the stated reason is vague, a data access request under GDPR (or CCPA for California residents) can compel disclosure of the information Coinbase holds about the decision. Common triggers worth ruling out early: a card chargeback on a linked payment method, a counterparty-data mismatch under the Travel Rule on an incoming transfer, and legacy verification data that no longer matches your documents.
‘Restricted to withdrawals only’ is the one status people fight when they shouldn’t. That’s Coinbase offboarding you as a customer, which is its right under the user agreement — contesting it just delays the thing you actually want, which is your funds out. We tell clients in that situation to stop arguing with support and start preparing the receiving bank’s own source-of-funds file, because that’s usually the real bottleneck, not Coinbase.

Frequently asked questions
Why did Coinbase restrict my account?
Four typical reasons: a payment method problem, the risk profile of your transactions (offboarding), a compliance review with a document request, or an external order from an authority. The notification email tells you which.
How long does it take for Coinbase to unrestrict an account?
Payment restrictions take days; a compliance review 2–6 weeks; offboarding is not "lifted" at all — there the task is to withdraw your funds.
Can I withdraw funds from a restricted account?
In most variants, yes: withdrawals are frozen completely only during an active review or under an external order.
