Why KuCoin blocks the way it does
KuCoin was for a long time a platform with light verification, and it is passing the tightening of regulatory requirements on to its older users: withdrawals are blocked until full KYC is completed, and where the data does not match, until source of funds has been checked as well. The second common trigger is access from jurisdictions the platform has stopped serving: then only a restricted withdrawal is offered.
What to do
- Complete the KYC tier requested using your real details — trying to "finish off" an old account with someone else's documents reliably turns a temporary block into a permanent one.
- If source of funds is requested after KYC, build the file per our guide: for older accounts the key document is the history of where the funds came from at the time of deposit, however long ago that was.
- If service is refused on jurisdictional grounds, agree the withdrawal route in writing before you transfer anything: some routes do not work for restricted countries and funds get stuck in transit.
- Escalate with a formal claim; KuCoin responds noticeably faster to a mention of a complaint to the regulator of its licensing jurisdiction than to tickets.
Frequently asked questions
KuCoin demands KYC for a withdrawal — do I have to comply?
Formally this is the platform's right under the agreement and AML requirements. There are only two alternatives: pass verification, or demand release through a claims procedure — slower and with no guarantees.
How long does KuCoin hold funds during a review?
KYC takes days; a source of funds review takes 2–6 weeks where the document file is complete.
